When you are tired of mountains and forests where would you want to go? Probably sea, right? It is an adventure when you set sail on a boat or go paragliding over the ocean and see dolphins, it gives you an adrenaline rush. Digha is a beach town that will satisfy these needs and the adrenaline rush you are craving.
It was
called Beerkul in the early years before independence. The name Brighton
of the East was referred in the letters of Warren Hastings. Its prominence
increased as an English businessman started mentioning the place in his
frequent writings and he convinced then Chief Minister of Bengal to turn it
into a Beach Resort. It is now a very well-known tourist spot among the
people of West Bengal. So popular it is that Bengalis usually find excuses to
take leave and visit this beautiful beach town.
Now you
might ask what is there in this beach town other than the beach? Well, there
are a lot of tourist attractions in Digha and around in the outskirts as well,
some of which are Amarabati Park, Marine Station/Aquarium of Zoological
Survey of India, Kajal Dighi Wonderland, Digha Science Centre etc. One
place that I personally would urge you to visit would be Talasari Beach, this
place is famous for the Red Crabs. When you talk to a tour and travel
agency you will be told that there are numerous Red Crabs in Talasari Beach
which is not seen in any other beaches of our country. Maybe you’ll find Krabs
among those red crabs and get a free burger from Krusty Krab if you
are nice to him!! You can even visit another beach called Mondarmoni but
only if you are traveling with a large group otherwise you might find the
place boring as there is very little population.
When you are
living in West Bengal reaching Digha is quite easy as there are numerous
ways, you can travel by bus or train or fly there but from north India you will
first have to reach Kolkata and then take any of the alternatives already
stated. There are several hotels where you can stay some at the beach, some a
bit far from the beach and some right in the middle of the town a lot far from
the beach. You can choose based on your preference.
