Virat Kohli eyes MS Dhoni's captaincy record in pink-ball Test against Joe Root-led England at Motera

Virat Kohli will hope to break MS Dhoni's captaincy record in the upcoming pink-ball Test match against Joe Root-led England at Motera on Wednesday.

After guiding Team India to an emphatic series-leveling win over Joe Root's England, skipper Virat Kohli has set his sights on surpassing legendary MS Dhoni in elite of Indian Test captains. Known for his shrewd captaincy and batting supremacy across all formats of the game, skipper Kohli will look to enter his name in the history books when India play their third pink-ball Test match at the newly reconstructed Sardar Patel Stadium (The Motera) in Ahmedabad from Wednesday.

Kohli, who led India to a massive 317-run win in the 2nd Test match at the Chepauk is only one win away from overtaking Dhoni's tally of most Test wins by an Indian skipper at home. The charismatic leader of the Indian cricketer team had matched his predecessor when India thrashed Root and Co. in the Chennai Test match.

Both Kohli and Dhoni have won 21 matches as captain for the Asian giants in the longest and oldest formats of the gentlemen's game. Since Dhoni has already retired from international cricket, skipper Kohli was tipped to eclipse the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman in the ongoing four-match Test series.

Thus, if Team India manages to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series, Kohli will add another feather in his already illustrious cap by becoming the Indian skipper with the most number of Test wins on the international circuit. Besides Dhoni and Kohli (21 wins each), the elite list also features the likes of Mohammad Azharuddin (13), Sourav Ganguly (10), and Sunil Gavaskar (7).

Talking about the upcoming 3rd Test match between England and hosts India, skipper Kohli is also 23 runs short of overtaking Dilip Vengsarkar’s run tally to become the 6th highest Test scorer for India at home. Kohli and India’s No.3 batsman Cheteshwar Pujara are also 45 and 12 runs of joining the 1k club against England at home. Only Sunil Gavaskar (1331) and Gundappa Viswanath (1022) have scored more than 1,000 Test runs against England in India.
