The Management
Information System (MIS) is an integrated man-machine system that provides
information to support the planning and control functions of managers in an
organization. Today the need of updated information has become necessary, to
arrive at an effective decision in all walks of life. Whether it is
organization, commerce, defence, education, defence, etc information is needed
everywhere. MIS can also be defined as the combination of human and
computer-based resources that results in the collection, storage, retrieval,
communication and use of data for efficient management of operations and for
business planning.
The computer has added one or more dimensions to it: such as accuracy, space, speed
and increased volume of data; that permit the consideration of more
alternatives in a decision. Management Information System information includes the
terms: Management, Information and System. Thus the meaning of MIS will include
definition of these three terms.
Management –Management provides the primary force of getting activities done
efficiently with and through others. It is possibly the most valuable resource
because it involves decision making like the setting and achieving goals
through the execution of five basic management functions: planning, organising,
staffing, directing and controlling.
Information –It can be defined as the data which is collected, analysed, organised
and presented at a time and place so that the decision maker may take necessary
action. In other words information is the result / product of processing data.
Information generates new information.
System –A system is group of elements or components joined together and form a
unified whole. The system has various inputs, which go through certain
processes to produce certain outputs, which together, accomplish the overall
desired goal for the system.
Thus, MIS is an integrated
man-machine systems which collects, maintain, correlates and selectively displays
information in the proper time frame consistently.
